In a sweeping operation targeting international drug syndicates, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 108.67 kg of hydroponic weed in less than 20 days under its ongoing “Operation Weed Out.” The seizures, made across multiple airports and cities, highlight a growing trend of smuggling attempts from Thailand into India.
On 13–14 September 2025, DRI officers at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, intercepted two Indian nationals arriving from Bangkok. A detailed examination of their baggage revealed 39 packets of hydroponic cannabis weighing 39.2 kg. A swift follow-up led to the arrest of the intended recipient, bringing the total number of arrests in this case to three.
In another Mumbai operation, acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials seized 7.8 kg (gross weight) of hydroponic weed smuggled in from Bangkok. Two passengers were taken into custody under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Between 26 August and 12 September 2025, officers also intercepted 61.67 kg of hydroponic cannabis in separate seizures at Jaipur, Lucknow, and Kolkata airports. All consignments were traced back to smuggling attempts originating from Bangkok.
These operations follow an earlier nationwide crackdown on 20–21 August 2025, when DRI had recovered 72.024 kg of hydroponic weed valued at approximately ₹72 crore. Alongside the narcotics, illegal proceeds amounting to ₹1.02 crore were also seized, and five individuals, including financiers and a key mastermind were arrested.
The repeated interceptions point to a sharp surge in attempts to smuggle hydroponic weed from Thailand into India through different airports. Authorities said such coordinated action underlines the agency’s determination to dismantle trafficking networks.
DRI reaffirmed that it will continue to pursue drug syndicates with firmness, reinforcing the Government of India’s vision of a “Nasha Mukt Bharat.”
