The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Superintendent and an Inspector of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST), Santacruz Division, Mumbai, on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹25,000.

According to the CBI, the case was registered on October 7th following allegations that the two officials had sought bribe from a textile trading firm in return for issuing a favourable report and facilitating its GST registration. The firm had applied for registration online on September 24th.

During an inspection conducted on October 3rd, the CGST Inspector allegedly demanded ₹25,000 as an “undue advantage” for himself and his superior officer. He also warned that the GST Registration Certificate would not be issued unless the payment was made.

Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and apprehended both officers red-handed while they were accepting the money at the CGST West Mumbai Office on October 7th. Searches were also carried out at their premises.

The arrested Superintendent and Inspector are scheduled to be produced before the competent court in Mumbai. The CBI has stated that investigation into the bribery case is underway. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
