The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Ludhiana Zonal Unit, seized 187 kilograms of cannabis (Ganja) worth around ₹56 lakh and arrested five people after intercepting two cars near Shambhu Border Toll Plaza on the G.T. Road in Patiala.

Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers intercepted the two vehicles suspected of carrying contraband in violation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. During a thorough search, officers recovered 111 packets of cannabis,59 from one car and 52 from the other, all individually wrapped in khaki-coloured plastic tape. The packets were concealed in specially made cavities in the floor of both cars.

According to DRI the operation was carried out on October 12th 2025, leading to the arrest of all five occupants of the seized vehicles. The contraband and the two cars have been confiscated.

DRI, functioning under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Ministry of Finance, serves as India’s apex anti-smuggling agency. It focuses on preventing the smuggling of narcotics, wildlife, and environmentally sensitive items, as well as tackling customs evasion and commercial frauds linked to international trade.
