In a major breakthrough against narcotics smuggling, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Amritsar Regional Unit, have seized a record 47.7 kilograms of Hydroponic Weed (a high-grade variant of ganja) from two passengers arriving from Singapore at the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport.

According to a statement issued by the DRI Zonal Unit, Ludhiana, the operation was carried out on the basis of specific intelligence inputs, leading officials to intercept two Indian nationals who had landed on Scoot Airlines flight TR 512 from Singapore on November 9, 2025. A systematic examination of their checked-in baggage revealed 44 packets of Hydroponic Weed ingeniously concealed within layers of clothing.

The DRI stated that 23.94 kilograms of the contraband were recovered from one passenger and 23.76 kilograms from the other, together valued at approximately ₹47.7 crore in the illicit market. Both individuals were arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and further investigation is underway.

Authorities described this as the biggest seizure of an NDPS substance ever made at Amritsar Airport. Officials noted that the case has exposed a new smuggling modus operandi involving the trafficking of Hydroponic Weed from Bangkok via Singapore, a route apparently designed to evade existing intelligence surveillance.

The agency added that this interception marks a significant success in curbing organized international narcotics trafficking and this seizure not only prevented a major drug consignment from entering the Indian market but also unearthed a fresh smuggling route intended to mislead enforcement agencies.

The DRI Amritsar unit continues to tighten its vigilance at international airports across Punjab as part of its intensified campaign against cross-border drug syndicates.
