The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), Mumbai Zonal Office has arrested Ushik Gala, promoter of the Suumaya Group of Companies, in connection with a major money laundering investigation. Gala was taken into custody on November 17, 2025, under Section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, following what officials described as extensive examination of financial records and evidence. He has been remanded to ED custody till November 24, 2025.
The investigation stems from an FIR originally filed at Worli Police Station and later transferred to the Mumbai Police Economic Offences Wing (EOW). The case names M/s Dentsu Communications India Pvt. Ltd., M/s Suumaya Industries Ltd., Gala, and others, accusing them of conspiring to misappropriate approximately ₹137 crore under the pretext of offering lucrative benefits through a so-called “Need to Feed” government programme.
According to the ED, the probe has revealed that the Suumaya Group, in collusion with certain employees of Dentsu India, fabricated a bogus Haryana government contract to obtain trade financing. This allegedly enabled the company to convert fictitious business activity into seemingly legitimate turnover.
Investigators say funds routed to Suumaya entities were further diverted to dummy agro-trading companies in Delhi and Haryana through a middleman. Although shown as payments for agricultural procurement, the investigation found that no real purchases took place. Instead, the money was allegedly circulated back to Gala through a mix of cash and RTGS transfers involving shell entities.
The ED also uncovered evidence of fake invoices and forged lorry receipts used to simulate massive trading activity. Officials estimate that circular transactions worth nearly ₹5,000 crore were executed, of which only about 10% reflected genuine business. The inflated financial activity, the agency said, artificially boosted Suumaya’s turnover from ₹210 crore to ₹6,700 crore in just two years and contributed to a rapid rise in the share price of its listed companies, misleading investors and the market.
Earlier, the ED had carried out search operations across 19 locations in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurgaon. These raids resulted in seizure of movable assets and large volumes of digital and financial documents suspected to be linked to money laundering and fund diversion.
The agency has stated that further investigation in the case is currently underway.
