Responding to a nationwide call by the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions, the United Front of Trade Unions Ludhiana today staged a massive protest against the new Labour Codes. Workers expressed their anger by burning copies of the unilaterally implemented notification of the anti-worker codes and submitted a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister through the Deputy Commissioner. The unions alleged that the government is pushing these codes to serve corporate interests, which constitutes a severe attack on workers' rights and employment security.
In the memorandum, the Central Trade Unions explicitly stated that the notification issued on November 21, 2025, directly attacks the nature of a Welfare State by ignoring the democratic process. They highlighted that ten central trade unions have consistently opposed these codes and demanded the convening of the Indian Labour Conference, which the government has failed to hold for the last ten years (since 2015). Union leaders accused the government of neglecting workers, their strikes, and their protests to implement these codes. They warned that, during a period of deep unemployment and recession, this notification amounts to a 'declaration of war' against the working class. The leaders demanded the immediate repeal of the Labour Codes and the restoration of the old labour laws. Speakers announced that they will continue the struggle against these codes and will intensify it further. The trade unions of Ludhiana, alongside the nation's working class, will participate vigorously in the continuous struggle against the government's pro-corporate and anti-people stance toward workers. The action was led by leaders from AITUC, INTUC, CITU, and CTU Punjab, including M.S. Bhatia, Gurjeet Singh Jagpal, Jagdish Chand, Vijay Kumar, Sarabjit Singh Sarhali, and Paramjit Singh.
