Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal on Thursday reviewed the Buddha Dariya Rejuvenation Project and directed officials to ensure the proper functioning of all STPs and ETPs while setting a December 10 deadline to close remaining sewer inflow points.
MP Seechewal chaired the review meeting at the MC Zone D office in Sarabha Nagar in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain and MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal. He told the officials of the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board to fix accountability in cases of negligence related to sewage and effluent treatment.
He also warned representatives of the Haibowal and Tajpur Road dairy complexes to immediately stop dumping waste into Buddha Dariya. The dairy owners were asked to cooperate with the administration, and officials said feedback had been taken on the matter.
Civic officials informed MP Seechewal that work was underway at one or two remaining sewer inflow points and assured that all entries into the Buddha Dariya would be blocked by December 10. The district administration was also instructed to expedite the demarcation survey of the water body.
Officials from the Municipal Corporation, PWSSB, PPCB, PEDA and other departments attended the meeting, including MC Additional Commissioner Paramdeep Singh and SE Harpreet Singh.
MP Seechewal further asked officials to act strictly against the dumping of cow dung and untreated industrial waste. He said the government was committed to reducing pollution in Buddha Dariya and noted that the water recorded a 160 TDS level at the Sangat Ghat point on Thursday.
He urged residents to stop dumping waste and contribute to preserving the water body, which holds religious and historical significance. He added that collective efforts were essential for safeguarding water resources and the environment for future generations.
