The tragic death of a teacher couple from Moga district while travelling for election duty has sent shockwaves across Punjab and sparked concern among teachers’ unions over the safety and workload of educators assigned to election-related responsibilities.

The couple lost their lives in a road accident while en route to their designated polling station on Sunday, December 14, 2025, for the zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections. As per reports, their vehicle slipped into an open drain near Sangatpura village in the Baghapurana area amid dense fog. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were declared dead.

The deceased were identified as Jaskaran Singh Bhullar and his wife Kamaljeet Kaur, both government school teachers. Colleagues said Jaskaran Singh was accompanying his wife to her polling assignment when the mishap occurred, highlighting the challenges faced by employees who are required to travel significant distances during election duty.

The Democratic Teachers Front (DTF) Punjab expressed grief over the incident and called for a review of deployment practices for teachers on election duty. Union representatives said educators are often posted far from their places of residence and urged the administration to ensure better planning, safer travel arrangements and greater sensitivity to weather and road conditions.
